Yuri Sergeyevich Osipov — Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor, President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, statesman and public figure.
Yu.S. Osipov is an outstanding specialist in mathematics and mechanics. The main research is devoted to the theory of control, differential equations and their numerous applications.
Y.S. Osipov was born on July 7, 1936 in Tobolsk. In 1954, Yuri Osipov graduated from Tobolsk Secondary School No. 13 with a gold medal. In 1959 he graduated from the Physics and Mathematics Faculty of the Ural State University. His first job was as an engineer in a branch organization (1959−1961), then as a graduate student, assistant, associate professor at Ural University (1961−1969). In 1965 he defended his PhD thesis. In 1969 he was elected a senior researcher at the Sverdlovsk Branch of the Steklov Mathematical Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences (since 1970 — Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics of the Ural Scientific Center of the Academy, IMM URO). In 1971 he defended his doctoral dissertation, in 1975 he received the title of professor. Since 1990 — Professor of Lomonosov Moscow State University, since 1991 — Head of the Department of Moscow State University, and since June 1993 — Director of the Mathematical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
He was the president of the Russian Academy of Sciences (in 1996 he was elected for a second term, in 2001 for a third, in 2008 for a fourth term).
Yu.S. Osipov is the author of more than 150 works that have received wide recognition in our country and abroad. Directs major applied research.
Yuri Sergeyevich Osipov is a laureate of the Lenin Prize (1976), the State Prize of the Russian Federation in the field of science and technology (1993), awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor (1978), the Order of Merit for the Fatherland of the III degree (1996), the Order of Merit for the Fatherland of the I degree — "for contribution to the development of domestic science and many years of conscientious work" (2006). He is a member of the American Mathematical Society, an honorary doctor of Bar-Ilan University (Israel), a member of the Washington Academy of Arts and Science, an honorary member of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences, awarded a high international distinction and made a Knight of the White Cross of the World Confederation of Knights (Sydney), an honorary doctor of the University of Sant Jago (Chile), a member of the Moscow Mathematical Society, Honorary Professor of Moscow State University. For outstanding achievements in mathematics and physics, the scientist was awarded the Gold Medal named after L. Euler of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Honorary Citizen of Tobolsk.
